Prof. Massood Zandi Atashbar, an alumnus of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Isfahan University of Technology and currently a professor at Western Michigan University in the USA, has been honored with the prestigious title of 2023 IEEE Fellow. This esteemed recognition is in acknowledgment of his significant contributions to the field of flexible hybrid electronics.

Prof. Atashbar, a Senior Member of IEEE, holds a B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from Isfahan University of Technology (1989), an M.Sc. degree from Sharif University of Technology (1992), and a Ph.D. from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, Australia (1998). From 1998 to 1999, he was a Post-Doctoral Fellow with the Center for Electronic Engineering and Acoustic Materials, Pennsylvania State University, State College, PA, USA.

He is currently a Presidential Innovation Professor, a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, and the Founding Director at the Center for Advanced Smart Sensors and Structures (CASSS), Western Michigan University, USA. He is a Distinguished Faculty Scholar Awardee. He has authored or co-authored more than 300 refereed articles, refereed conference proceedings, and four book chapters. In addition, he has more than ten patents and 35 intellectual disclosures. His research interests include physical and chemical sensor development, wireless sensors, and nanotechnology applications in sensors and flexible hybrid electronic devices.

Dr. Atashbar is an Associate Editor for the Frontiers in Sensors Journal and acted as a Guest Editor for a special issue on printed and flexible sensors in the MDPI Biosensors Journal. It is worth noting that in addition to Prof. Massood Zandi Atashbar, several other esteemed individuals from Iran have attained this prestigious recognition. Prof. Alireza Bakhshai, a graduate and former faculty member of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at IUT, achieved this honor in 2021. Likewise, Prof. Jamaloddin Golestani, a former professor of IUT and assistant professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Sharif University of Technology, was recognized in 2000. Other notable individuals include Prof. Homayoun Hashemi (2023), Prof. Javad Salehi (2011), and Prof. Mahmoud Fotouhi Firoozabad (2014).

The IEEE Grade of Fellow recognizes individuals with exceptional accomplishments in IEEE fields of interest. Each year, no more than one-tenth of one percent of the total voting membership is selected.
