The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 1979. From beginning, the department mission has been to offer students high quality mechanical engineering programs. The department education program has been designed to enhance the abilities of the students with cutting edge research, critical thinking and problem solving skills. The Department currently has approximately 480 undergraduate students, over 400 M.Sc. students, and 90 Ph.D. students.

Our vision for research is to establish the Department of Mechanical Engineering as a world leader in innovation and to offer excellent research training that will benefit the wider society. Our research, conducted by 42 full time faculty members, covers a broad spectrum of topics, with a strong integration between computation and experiment, and includes areas such as computational mechanics, mechatronics, control and robotics, renewable energies, nano-fluidic and nanotechnology and precision manufacturing processes. The outcome of these researches is annually published in more than 100 articles in prestigious journals.

The department is committed to provide a supportive learning environment in which talented students are able to obtain professional and teamwork skills by conducting challenging group project as well as taking part in national and international student competitions. Our past successes in terms of achieving top awards in different student competitions demonstrate the quality of the department education and research training programs.

We endeavor to provide appropriate means for our students and scholars to engage in world-class scientific research as well as being involved in finding solutions for the national and global problems. For this purpose, the department has invested substantially in recent years on its research infrastructure and educational facilities. We expect these investments to be fruitful in terms of both high quality graduates and excellence in scientific research.

Academic Programs

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers the degrees of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Pure Mathematics, Industrial Mathematics, and Statistics. At the graduate level, it offers the Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Ph.D. in Pure and Applied Mathematics and Pure and Applied Statistics.

 

 

In order to fulfill the requirements of mechanical engineering department, all undergraduate students must take 140 credits according to the following table. Upon the fulfillment of requirements, the undergraduate students are granted a B.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering. However, at the end of second year, they have to select one major and take the major-specific courses accordingly. Seven majors are currently available in this department including Manufacturing, Mechatronic and Dynamic Systems, Solid Mechanics, Mechanical Design, Automotive, HVAC, Energy, and Aerospace Engineering. The major-specoific courses are subdivided into the core and elective major courses as shown in the following tables.

Master students must take 29 credits from their program courses.  The required courses have been clearly specified in the following curriculum file. It is important to note that “Seminar” and “Thesis” are required for all master students.

Ph.D. students are required to take 24 credits out of the course offered in their own program. The required courses have been clearly specified in the tables of the curriculum file. After passing the comprehensive exam, they must register for dissertation and take the cumulative exams (2 times a year).
